Many vehicle owners are not aware that if they are experiencing problems with a car that doesn't start right off, it could be a problem with either the starter or alternator. Let us explain:

Starters

A starter is a device that is used to induce the operation of an internal combustion engine by initiating its rotation. The function of the starter is to turn the engine over during the ignition process and allow the remaining processes to happen on its own. The starter is an electric motor itself. It engages when the ignition is turned on and disengages after the engine has turned over.

A starter may fail if its relay is experiencing a mechanical failure. In that case, there are some problem signs. The most obvious one is when the car does not start. Another sign is when a clicking sound is coming from the starter. This kind of problem is common with car batteries that are low on amps and can be solved by replacing the relay.

Alternators

An alternator is a typical electrical generator that is used to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Alternators are usually used in automobiles for the purpose of charging the battery and at the same time powering the electrical system of a car when the engine is running. They are typically found next to the engine and are specifically driven by the crankshaft. However, it is always easy to know when there are some problems with alternators. The first sign is dimmed headlights and flickering gauges. Sometimes there is a growling sound or odd smell coming under the hood. Don't ignore these signs because the problem may start from a slow start all the way to a dead vehicle.
