So you’re looking at some major brake repair for your vehicle? Any type of vehicle repair can take a lot of your time and money. However, taking care of your brakes is crucial for safe driving. It is better to spend a couple of hours at your auto shop and pay out some dollars upfront to make sure your vehicle is driving as safe as possible rather than driving one that isn’t safe.

A big concern for busy drivers is “How long does brake service take?” Take the advice of your brake repair technician when it comes to answering that question. In terms of driving safety, brake repair is worth every minute and penny you have to spend!

The braking system has several components that will eventually wear out over time, including the rotors, calipers, pads, discs, hoses, and drums. However, there are three main brake components that generally require the most attention:

  • Brake Pads – If you hear the sound of metal on metal, (grinding or squealing sound when the brakes are engaged) this means the brake pads may need to be replaced. If they aren’t replaced in a timely manner, damage to the calipers and/or rotors can occur.
  • Calipers – Calipers push the brake pads against the wall of the rotor, creating the friction that brings your vehicle to a stop. If the calipers are worn out, they can no longer exert enough pressure against the pads to stop your vehicle.
  • Brake Rotors - Rotors have a specified minimum thickness. If they are within that minimum thickness, they may only need to be resurfaced, a simple and relatively inexpensive brake repair. However, if they have gone beyond that measurement, they will need to be replaced.

Tips to Remember: Depending on your driving habits, it may not be necessary to replace these components very often. Just remember to have your brakes inspected on a regular basis, possibly at every oil change. Brake repair is serious business! Taking a little more time at your auto shop and spending a few more dollars is worth the safety and peace of mind.
