Is your vehicle rumbling down the road? If so, it would be smart to have your exhaust system inspected by a certified muffler repair technician. A good exhaust system will keep your car running smoothly and quietly, reduce toxic emissions, and even improve your gas mileage.

Here are six signs of muffler problems to watch out for:

  1. Noisy muffler – The muffler should typically be operating quietly, barely noticeable. However, when problems develop, it can sound like a roaring train.
  2. Rattling Noises – A failing catalytic converter may sound like someone is shaking a metal box full of coins. Has it inspected as soon as possible if you hear this sound as it is one of the most expensive components of the exhaust system to replace?
  3. Decreased fuel economy – If you’re filling the tank more often than usual, it could mean there is a problem. Newer vehicles have a computer sensor that monitors fuel economy and overall performance so a problem can be detected in the exhaust system before it gets serious.
  4. Toxic fumes – A properly working muffler funnels exhaust fumes outside and away from the vehicle. If there is a leak or other problem, those fumes could be circulating inside your car.
  5. Vibrating – If your car is vibrating a lot or losing power, it could be an exhaust problem. Or, it could also be something else. Your auto mechanic can help you find the source of the problem.
  6. Check Engine Light – If the catalytic converter is failing, it can cause the check engine light on your dashboard to illuminate.
