Family of Rum River Auto

Most parts of the country are now starting to experience the warmer days of summer. That means it is time for fun summer road trips. Part of planning for your trip should include an inspection of all the systems of your vehicle so that it is as safe as possible to drive. A pre-trip auto service provides the opportunity to have any necessary repairs made at home by your own trusted auto shop mechanics who know your vehicle.

Check out these summer auto service tips:

  • Tires - Driving on under-inflated tires can cause them to overheat and increase the likelihood of a blowout, especially if temperatures are extremely high. Make sure the tread is adequate, your wheels are in proper alignment, and tires rotated if needed. You may need to consider purchasing new tires.
  • Brakes - Make sure your brakes are functioning properly to meet the challenges of all road conditions.
  • Battery - Check the level of battery fluid and clean any corrosive buildup from the terminals and cable clamps. Make sure the clamps are tight. If your battery is more than three years old, make sure it is still holding a good charge.
  • Radiator - The coolant should be at the correct level as this protects the engine from overheating.
  • Hoses and belts - Inspect for cracking, soft spots or other signs of poor condition.
  • Air filter - Replacing the air filter will help keep the motor running smoothly.
  • Oil change - If an oil change is due while you’re on your road trip, have it done before you leave home.
  • Fluid levels - Engine fluids lubricate and serve as coolants by helping carry heat away from critical components. If fluid levels are too low, the cooling effect is reduced, increasing the possibility of overheating.
  • Air conditioner - More than just a pleasant convenience, a properly working A/C helps reduce fatigue and maintain the driver’s alertness. Make sure the refrigerant level is correct.
  • Emergency kit - This should include water, snacks, jumper cables, flashlight (with extra batteries), road flares, first aid kit, and cell phone and charger.
