Some drivers don’t understand that at times you have to spend a little money in order to save money! How is that, you ask? Keep up with the recommended automotive service issues that will keep your vehicle running smoothly and efficiently! This will save you money in the long run by preventing unexpected and costly automotive repair issues.

Automotive repair technicians are trained to know what maintenance service should be done when it should be done, and how much it will cost. They can educate you as to what problems could develop if you neglect certain service items, such as the ones listed below:

  • Regular oil changes, including replacing the filter.
  • Inspection of the brakes (replacing brake pads, rotors, and calipers as necessary).
  • Check to make sure all lights are working properly and lenses clean.
  • The windshield should be free of cracks or large pits, obstructing your vision. Replace the wipers about every six to 12 months, especially if you live in a rainy climate.
  • Inspect the tires, making sure the air pressure is correct and that the tread is sufficient to grip the road. About every six months (or at every other oil change) have the tires rotated to make sure the tread is wearing evenly.
  • Inspect the transmission and radiator periodically for cracks or leaks. A complete flush of the fluid may be recommended if it is looking dirty.

So how do you know that the right automotive repair is being done on your vehicle? There are two ways to know if your vehicle is having problems:

  • The “on-board diagnostic” system (or OBD) in many of today’s vehicles receives thousands of codes from the car's sensors, continuously compiling information. The “Check Engine” light on the instrument panel is triggered when a problem is detected.
  • A diagnostic test with a specialized computer allows your mechanic to pinpoint small issues before they turn into major and costly automotive repair issues.

A word to the wise: Spending time and money on regular automotive service is an investment in the safety and reliability of your vehicle.
