As a conscientious vehicle owner, you’ve trained your ear to notice if something doesn’t sound quite right when you start up your car. If you start to have a noisy car, you know there’s a problem either under the hood or the underside of your car. You may notice other problems that indicate that some type of damage has taken place in the muffler or some other component of the exhaust system.

Most drivers are aware that the muffler is located on the underside of the vehicle, which means it receives a lot of wear and tears in normal driving conditions, such as salt on icy roads or ocean winds that can cause rust, driving over speed bumps and potholes too fast, hitting obstacles in the road, or installing a custom exhaust system that exceeds the capability of your vehicle.

If you are wondering how do you know if your exhaust system is bad, here are some noticeable signs of problems:

  • Backfiring/Misfiring Engine – If the muffler is damaged it cannot channel the exhaust fumes out of the vehicle.
  • Check Engine Light Illuminates – A diagnostic test can pinpoint the cause of that light illuminating.
  • Fewer Miles per Gallon – You are spending more on fuel than usual.
  • Decrease of Power – There is a pause when you step on the accelerator, or the engine could actually stall.
  • Noisy Muffler – The muffler is damaged and is leaking exhaust fumes
  • Obnoxious odor – You smell the exhaust fumes that are being sucked into the car, unsafe for your health.
  • Condensation in the exhaust pipe – Moisture can condense and collect inside the exhaust pipe and muffler, resulting in rust, leaking gases, and noise.

A tip to remember:  Each time you visit your auto shop for some other service and your car is on a lift, ask your mechanic to inspect the muffler and exhaust system.
