How do you know if your wheels need alignment?
Why do legions of cars die young? Many vehicle owners don’t understand basic maintenance. If you fall into that crowd, don’t feel bad. You’re in the majority. Even though 95% of U.S. adults drive, less than 20% know how to fix their vehicles.
Now, we’re not suggesting that everyone pick up a screwdriver. Becoming a master mechanic takes a lot of dedication and mechanical talent. However, if you know how to spot common problems before they become expensive ones, you could add years to your car’s life and save yourself money!
To that end, today we’re answering a common vehicle maintenance question: How do you know if your wheels need alignment? There are three main indicators.
- Vehicle Pulls to One Side: Have you ever been driving along and noticed that your car wants to go in a different direction than you? No matter how hard you try to keep it straight, it insists on pulling left or right? When that happens, it’s typically a sign that you need a car alignment.
- Steering Wheel Isn’t Centered: An off-center steering wheel is another indicator that your wheels need alignment. How do you determine if your wheel is off-center? Most cars have an emblem in the middle of the hood. When driving straight, is that emblem centered, or is it off kilter? If it’s the latter, your car likely needs an alignment.
- Rapid or Uneven Tire Wear: If you ask a gearhead, “How do you know if your wheels need alignment?” they’ll probably say, “Your tires!” The tires of a vehicle in need of a car alignment will likely be worn on the inner or outer edge, or one tire may be considerably more worn than the rest. Vibrations at high speeds and squealing tires may also be red flags.
Don’t wait if you notice any of the red flags above. Wheel alignments are relatively inexpensive, but failing to get it done will demolish your fuel efficiency and compromise your car’s steering, which could lead to a catastrophic accident.
