How Often Do Radiators Need To Be Replaced?
I believe that we've all experienced going in for a brake job or an oil change only to be surprised that our car is about to die if we don't fork up hundreds of dollars for a major repair. One of those surprises could be your radiator. Let's take a look at some warning signs and preventative measures of radiator repair.
First, you must understand the purpose of the radiator. It is a heat exchanger used for cooling internal combustion engines, mainly in automobiles. Coolant should be mixed with the water in the radiator, which circulates through the engine block where it heats up, then through the radiator again where it is cooled, and then back to the engine. The process is repeated continuously while the car is running.
Green Does Not Mean Go!
The color of radiator coolant is typically green, although in some cases it could be orange. If you see green liquid leaking from underneath your car, you've possibly got a radiator problem or a leaky hose.
Don't Blow Your Top Off!
If you've checked and checked and can't seem to find the source of the leak, then your radiator could have a blown head gasket. This head gasket seals the cylinder head to the engine block. Leaks caused by this can result in extensive repairs, the kind you DON'T want to even think about!
