If your battery is starting to fail, you may be experiencing a few problems, such as your vehicle won’t start, move, or power electrical accessories. A dying battery may not seem like an urgent issue, but getting stranded on a cold winter day can be dangerous. Thankfully, batteries usually give a few warning signs before they die completely so you can get a car battery replacement before you’re left stranded on the side of the road.

So what are the symptoms of a weak car battery? Here are five warnings signs:

  1. Dim Headlights. A dying battery is not able to fully power your vehicle’s electrical components – including headlights. If your headlights seem dimmer and weaker than usual, the reduced light is not only a safety issue, it also means your car battery is ready to die.
  2. Clicking sound. When you turn the key in the ignition, the battery sends a current to an electrical component, called the starter solenoid. A failing battery will only be able to send a weak electrical current to the starter. When the starter receives insufficient power from the battery, it often makes a clicking noise.
  3. Slow Crank. If your engine cranks more slowly or sluggishly than normal, your battery may be about dead.
  4. Stepping on the Gas Pedal. If your car only starts when you press on the gas pedal, you may be dealing with a dying battery.
  5. Backfiring. A failing car battery can cause intermittent sparks, which can lead to fuel accumulating in the cylinders. When this built-up fuel is ignited, the sudden force causes your car to backfire. Be sure to have the battery tested as backfiring is also a sign of several different problems.

There is one little, but the important, thing that drivers can do to avoid a totally dead battery. Clean it off! Cleaning off corrosion around the battery terminals can help re-establish a connection.

Remember: Jumpstarting can bring a dead battery back to life, but it is only a temporary fix. Make sure you know how to jumpstart your vehicle if you’re stranded somewhere with a dead battery, but don’t rely on it for long!
