Many drivers don’t think about the condition of the transmission unit under the hood of their car until they start to experience shifting or overheating problems. Over time, and as the miles add up, transmission fluid becomes dirty and will lose its effectiveness to lubricate or disperse heat. So to maintain the power and performance of your vehicle, it’s important to schedule a transmission service, which typically includes a transmission fluid change.

Some mechanics may never recommend a transmission fluid change, while others may recommend replacing transmission fluid about every 50,000 miles. The best thing to do is to know what the vehicle’s manufacturer recommends in the service manual. Or, a certified transmission technician can also determine if your vehicle needs a transmission fluid change.

What does transmission service include? Usually, a basic transmission service includes:

  • The transmission pan and case, gasket, and sealing surface are inspected and cleaned.
  • The pan gasket will be replaced if it is worn or cracked, leaking transmission fluid.
  • The transmission filter will be replaced if it is dirty and clogged, placing a lot of stress on the transmission.
  • A transmission fluid change will be recommended if there is a significant buildup of sludge, if you notice a burnt smell, or if the fluid is dark in color.

Neglecting regular transmission service can result in any of the problems below:

  1. Delayed Shifting. There is not enough pressure in the transmission fluid.
  2. Difficulty Shifting. If sludge or grime has built up in the transmission fluid, the gears can change erratically, too fast, too slow, or too jerky, along with grinding sounds or unusually high RPMs.
  3. Slipping gears. The gears slip out of place because the friction material on the clutches and transmission bands is worn out.
  4. Overheating. If there is a loss of power along with a burning smell or smokiness, the transmission is overheating and internal damage could be taking place within the unit.

Remember: Regular transmission service will help prevent a major and costly transmission repair, as well as ensuring that your vehicle will give you many miles of reliable service.
