It is common knowledge among drivers that when brakes will need to be replaced at some point in time. But you may wonder how do you know when you need new brakes? Some brake components can be cleaned, lubricated, or resurfaced instead of replacing them. This will help keep your brakes in good condition and functioning properly so that your vehicle remains safe to drive. But neglecting a needed brake repair thinking you are saving money only serves to compromise the safety of your vehicle.

Are you wondering how do you know when you need new brakes? The fact is, the answer is simple—when needed! For example, when you start to hear unusual noises or feel vibrations you hadn’t felt before, it’s a good chance that some components of the brake system may be sticking, there is a buildup of dust or dirt, or the pads or rotors are wearing out. Some car manufacturers include brake service in the maintenance schedule, specifying a brake inspection about every 5,000-7,000 miles or every 4-6 months, whichever comes first.

Some brake repair specialists advise that a brake inspection should be done at every oil change or tire rotation. This inspection should include measuring the thickness of the brake pad, inspecting brake discs, making sure that the pads and caliper guide pins are moving freely, cleaning and lubricating to prevent sticking or seizing, and cleaning the surface of the rotors to prevent squeaking.

A word of advice: To keep driving safely, at your next brake inspection, ask your mechanic about how many more miles your brakes will last, or if any of the components should be replaced immediately.
