If one keeps a car long enough, it will eventually need attention, such as oil changes, transmission flushes, tire rotations, new battery, new tires, etc. If any of these maintenance items are ignored, they can cause problems. By understanding what is needed to keep your engine running strong, you can avoid major engine repair.

What are the signs of engine failure, you ask? First, pay attention to how your vehicle normally operates and runs. Knowing the signs of engine failure means you can head to your auto shop as soon as you start to notice any of the problems noted below:

  • Engine vibrates and shakes – due to bad spark plugs or worn-out hoses.
  • Smoke coming from the engine – there could be serious problems in the engine.
  • The engine keeps overheating – the level of coolant may be too low, the water pump isn’t working properly, or the oil level is too low.
  • Noisy engine – the catalytic converter could be bad, the muffler has holes in it, or the gaskets have broken or have worn out seals.
  • Leaking fluids – puddles of oil, coolant, or transmission fluid under your parked car are indicators of engine problems. Call for a tow to your auto shop as driving may cause further engine damage.
  • The “Check Engine” light illuminates – A diagnostic test can pinpoint the cause of this warning light coming on—it could be just a sensor or possible internal engine damage.
  • Lost power – There could be internal damage to the engine or transmission.
  • Lower fuel economy – There could be a problem with the fuel system, the engine stroke, or the transmission.
  • Engine runs rough and stalls – the spark plugs could be bad or dirty oil has clogged up the lines.

The key to preventing major engine repair in the first place is taking care of the recommended engine service at the right intervals. An inspection of the engine together with a diagnostic test (if possible at least once a year) can detect potential problems early and have them fixed before they turn into costly repair or engine failure!
