If you own a car long enough, you may experience starting problems at some point. It is possible there will be some warning signs, such as grinding or clicking sounds when turning the key. If these warnings are ignored, you may find yourself stranded somewhere unexpectedly. Or, there may not be any indicators at all, until all of a sudden your car won’t start.

So how often do car starters need to be replaced, you wonder? Starters are actually designed to last for at least 100,000 miles (even the lifetime of a vehicle). So be sure to have the condition of the alternator and battery checked out before replacing the starter. Your starting problem may not be the starter at all, but a failing alternator and a weak battery.

However, there are some situations that can prematurely cause the starter to go bad, such as:

  • The brushes, gears, and coil windings within the starter wear out,
  • The solenoid has gone bad,
  • Loose bolts are preventing the starter from engaging when the key is turned in the ignition, damaging the flywheel,
  • High mileage,
  • Continually driving over rough roads, and
  • Lack of quality vehicle maintenance.

A word of advice: If you keep trying to force your car to start when there is definitely a problem, you may cause further damage to all the components of the starting system, including the alternator and battery.
