Do you need to know what is the lifespan of a car battery? If it's been a few years since you changed your car’s battery, you may want to have it checked. Keep track of each time you have a car battery replacement. Even though manufacturers provide guidelines for the life of a battery, remember that once a battery hits the four-year mark, it may become unreliable.

No matter whether you have a brand-new car battery, or it’s starting to age, following the advice below will ensure that your battery remains strong for as long as possible:

  1. Limit Shorter Rides. Driving frequently and for extended periods of time helps maintain the charge in your battery. Typically, a battery cannot fully charge during short rides.
  2. Tighten Connections. If the battery is not tightened correctly, the constant vibrating can cause damage inside the circuits and the engine.
  3. Turn Off Lights. Leaving headlights on overnight, or leaving the door open with interior lights on can drain your battery’s charge completely.
  4. Keep Terminals Clean. Clean corrosion off the terminals periodically. DIY tip: scrub with a mixture of baking soda and water, rinse and dry thoroughly.
  5. Test Voltage. Test the output voltage of your battery frequently so you know if it’s holding a strong charge.
  6. Avoid Using Electronics While Idling. Turn off electronic accessories (such as the radio or air conditioner) while idling.
  7. Regular Car Tune-Ups. Your battery will be checked and cleaned during a tune up.
  8. Storing Your Car. Storing your car in a warm dry place helps your battery last longer.

Remember: You certainly don’t want to be stranded somewhere because of a dead battery. It is not only an inconvenience, but it could also be unsafe, such as in a dark parking lot.
